A Few More Projects Done

Constructed a pillow insert for the Wisteria piece. It has triangle corners on the back top edge for being a Wallhanging when that's what I want. 

And I got 17 rows, for a Row Robin, and 7 mug rugs put together and off to the post office. 

I used the method called Jelly Roll Racing to construct this quilt a while back. I quilted it with a gentle overall looping design using Glide thread in a golden color. The binding is actually a Christmas fabric. It harmonizes well with all those colors. I attached it by machine to the back, then did my pressing and brought it to the front. I top stitched it down with my 'heart beat' stitch. I already have an idea of whom will be getting this. 

While I was straightening up all my leftover fabrics I decided to get on with a project I've wanted to do for quite some time. It's to use up all the extra blocks, strips, cut offs, etc that I've saved from making many of my quilts. I determined that I had sufficient pieces from Myriah's quilt to make this 42" square. I may add another border. It would help stabilize the outer edge and give me another solid space for practicing quilting on my longarm machine, Abigail.

Progress Continues on Two Pieces

I've spent some time in the studio working on my 'Princess' piece. Here it is. 

 

The orange and deep purple borders are in the audition phase. I tried it with the orange as the outer border and the purple as the first one. But it was too bold, even for me!  I've also pinned up a portion of the bottom because it just looked too massive. I have several small snippets that I would like to sprinkle about. However, I feel the piece needs to be pleasing before I add anything else. The colors were not what I thought I would use, but I kept taking grey scale pictures and auditioning various colors. I wanted something that would bring life to the piece. I did put white fabric behind it to see how it 'sits' on a lighter wall, and the effect was fine. 

 

I know that if I use these colors, I want the orange to be minimal and the deep purple modest in width. 

I also did some work on my 'Wisteria' piece. I put the first border on then trimmed it down twice before I was satisfied with it's width. 

The golden print border has about 2" turned to the back. I wanted to get an idea of what it would look like if I did a gallery wrap onto a canvas frame. I've never done that before, but I think it would look good. Notice in the upper right I have cut a piece of the border fabric and pinned it to extend the original stem into the border. The green pieces on the lower left are destined to become leaves. I would like to do some stitching on it. Perhaps even some hand work. I'm not sure at this time. 

I've found that by having more than one project up on my design wall, I can flip between them and give myself time to ponder what I want to have done next. The only drawback with this is 'switching gears', so to speak, with the sewing machine. Different projects use different threads, needles, etc. But I am getting lots of practice!

Challenge Due March 1st

I have a challenge piece due March 1st. It is with the Just Use It group on Stitchinfingers.ning.com

The challenge is to take a piece that I rec'd from one of the swapping members and "frame" it. Now it doesn't mean it needs to be conventionally matted and framed, just "framed" in some way. We are doing these to encourage one another to use, not just collect, all the lovely pieces rec'd over each year. I think I received over 100 pieces during 2014. 

It wasn't easy to chose which one to work on first, but Hazel's wisteria piece won. 

It was done on a white damask napkin. I totally loved it, but the white was too stark for what I wanted to do with it. I used some weak dye solutions and a method that Ellen Anne Eddy taught for coloring the background. The lace insert pieces on the left don't show their color very well, but they were done at the same time. 

I know where I want to take this, I'm just not settled on my method yet. I will keep you posted.
