Ice Dyed Treasures - Icey Delights online class work

I just finished Icey Delights, an online class with Lynda Heines. Bloom Bake Create blog. We have been experimenting with various techniques using a method that incorporates ice for transporting the dye powders into your cloth. I've done something similar in the past but I never did 'controlled' tests, much less kept track of quantities and color names. Following are images of the 36 fat quarters I recently finished. Each piece was folded to fit within a space for photographing. I also wanted to be able to read the label in the future. 

Most produced a significant splitting of colors. These were all mixed Procion MX dye powders from Dharma Trading. No pure dye colors were used. A few, even though mixed hues, only had varying tints/shades of the color and no true splitting happened. Perhaps more dye powder, or longer batching time would have produced different results.

I have a significant amount of undyed (white) areas. This doesn't pose a problem to me. I can over dye the entire piece and those areas would be more subtly shaded. I doubt I'll do that, but then, it's all about getting the answer to the age old question, WHAT IF?

My week has not gone as planned. The intentions are being worked on, but not to the extent I had hoped for. Only 'hand dyed fabric' got a lot of attention. Here are some pictures of 3 days of dye-workshop!

There are 4 color wheels of 15 steps each. Below is an image of this week's 4 batches and stacked behind them are several others that I worked on last week. 

I also had two appointments with clients. 

Went to the beach yesterday. Did the grocery shopping today! 

In 10 minutes I leave for the Salon to get my hair trimmed! This hot and humid weather is making me welcome a short pixie look!  

I'll do a review of August intentions and forward look at some for September on Monday.

Fun with Color Wheels.

I've been working on some specific color wheels for hand dyed fabric.

Here's my favorite group of 30 steps. They have a deep saturation, lots of texture, and are jewel tones. 

These 21 were created by combining the same three primaries that I used for the 'jewels' above. They are more muted and earthy looking. They still have a lot of texture, somewhat like cracked ice. 

I also put together a small group for a customer. She wanted a special color collection for a project she is working on.  

It's so encouraging to have clients that request a color palette be made for them. They know I will be very meticulous with the record keeping. If she decides she likes the top one but wants a more subtle blending of colors I will be able to make those for her this week. The 'dye lab' is always calling my name, and I love answering the call. 

On the more mundane side of things, I purged a large basketfull of clothes that wear just 'hanging around' and 'taking up space'. It is such a mood lifter to get rid of unused items. BTW I love the hat sitting on top of the pile, but in SC it's too warm to wear it.

An Art Quilt, Rita's

Here are a some pictures taken last week on our early morning trip to the beach. 

I can feel an art quilt coming on.  I could do an abstract one. I haven't done this  but would enjoy the adventure.

Hand Dyed Giveaway

I'm taking a class on www.academyofquilting.com and it has stretched my comfort zone. This is good for me. My first piece was to be representational of water. I was very influenced by Linda Schmidt's example. We are only making the tops at this point and this is what it looks like today. 

In the second lesson, she has us investigating 'fire', as in forest fire. This is where I'd really like to hear from you!

A week ago my piece was at this point and I liked it. 

I had more to do, and I did! But it got to this spot, and I didn't like it. 

I thought I might just 'set it on fire' ! I had lost all the work that was behind these trees and it is beginning to get rather "thick".  So, out came my scissors. I trimmed out that red overlay from between the trees and even though I was happier, I knew it would need a final overlay and 'maybe' some filmy stuff across the bottom. The next three pictures are my options at present. Please disregard the excesses  that extend below the piece. Things are not trimmed to size yet!

Number 1: golden under lay piece and black tulle over

Number 2: a dusty mauve underlay and black tulle over

Number 3: no underlay, just black tulle over 

So, which one appears most like a forest fire to you?
